Tub to Shower Conversion Options

June 13, 2014

2iMany homeowners and commercial property owners have become very interested in tub to shower conversions. This process is exactly what it sounds like: removing an old tub and making the bathroom a shower-only area. This isn’t recommended in all instances: for example, in the case of individual homeowners it’s likely to negatively affect resale value if there’s only one full bath in the house with no actual tub. This could also turn away buyers with children, as tubs are more or less a necessity with the younger set.

However, if you’re planning on living in your house for the long haul, or if you’re dealing with medical issues that make climbing in and out of a tub difficult, then your desires clearly trump that of the buyer’s. Also, if you’re renovating a commercial space, then a tub to shower conversion can be appealing. They can be easier to clean and better for accessibility purposes. Here are some great tub to shower conversion options:

  • Glass door or shower curtain. While most people think of glass doors when imagining tub to shower conversions, a regular curtain will work as well. Glass shower doors may appear more lux, but shower curtains are easier to maintain in certain cases (think water spots).
  • A built in seat. Since a shower-only conversion will give far more space in the shower area, it’s easier to put a seat in. This is particularly important for commercial spaces built for those who are elderly or who have disabilities. A built-in seat will make the shower safer and more accessible. Even for others, seats can help with shaving and other hygiene practices.
  • Hand-held showerheads. These are also available for traditional shower-baths, but are particularly important for those who are using the seat to shower.
  • Access handles. These are vital for those who have accessibility troubles. Access handles make getting into and out of the shower area easier and safer. Between one of these and the ease of accessing a shower-only enclosure, it cements a tub to shower conversion as the right choice for commercial endeavors addressing accessibility needs.
  • Ramps. For users who are wheelchair bound, this is a necessity. A flat entrance surface to simply roll onto is another option.

There are a myriad of options available for tub to shower conversions. When you’re ready to get started on this project, contact us at Ward Enterprise.
